The Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) Advocacy Update: Home Office Visits
The American Geriatrics Society is reminding its members that Senators and House Members will be on spring recess for much of April—an ideal time for making a home office visit to advocate for the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP).
The Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA) has developed a toolkit to support advocacy efforts for the GWEPs, which are federally funded sites that train and educate health professionals, direct care workers, and family caregivers in the care of older adults. You can sign-up for alerts from the AGS Health in Aging Advocacy Center: AGS will be setting up an online action in advance of the GWEP pre-conference at the AGS Annual Scientific Meeting (San Antonio, TX, May 18-20, 2017).
EWA staff has already been on the Hill to advocate for Title VII and VIII funding, and both EWA and AGS have submitted written testimony to the House Appropriations Committee. Planning a site visit in April will enable you to educate members and staff about the role the GWEP plays in your state and encourage adequate GWEP funding, as outlined by EWA. EWA is also happy to provide additional help and consultation on your advocacy activities.
