The Playbook Blog: Driving Improvements in Hospital Care through Palliative Care Quality Incentives
The Better Care Playbook has released a blog, "Driving Improvements in Hospital Care through Palliative Care Quality Incentives."
The value of hospital-based palliative care is well documented — better quality-of-life, alleviated symptoms, less caregiver burden, reduced readmissions, and increased patient and clinician satisfaction. This value has been underscored amid COVID-19, as clinicians, patients, and families struggle with complex decisions and distressing symptoms. Yet, reliable access to palliative care remains highly variable throughout the U.S.
This blog post describes how two health plans — Anthem, Inc. and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield — are championing palliative care in their network hospitals. Both organizations introduced a palliative care measure into their hospital value-based payment programs, which has led to significant improvements in access to palliative care for their seriously ill members.
