Website Resources: Safety in Dementia - Firearms, Driving and Home
The University of Colorado School of Medicine has announced a new online resource to help caregivers and families protect older adults with dementia, the Safety in Dementia website.
The resource focuses on driving, general home safety and firearm access. Clinicians, psychiatrists, caregivers and assisted living facility managers were among those interviewed to develop an effective tool.
Several practical solutions and guidance are provided that can be immediately implemented to increase safety. The tool can help guide difficult family discussions and decision making and can be accessed by the person with dementia in the earlier stages and also by family members across the progression of illness.
This decision aid was created by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health.
