West Jem

The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine (WestJEM) has published a paper, "A Qualitative Study of 'What Matters' to Older Adults in the Emergency Department."

In the qualitive study, researchers conducted 46 dyadic semi-structed interviews with older adults and their treating clinicians. The study adapted the Age-Friendly Health Systems "What Matters" - one of the 4Ms: What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility - questions to the emergency department (ED) setting to describe the concerns and desired outcomes of both older adult patients seeing ED care and their treating clinicians.

The study identified concerns and desired outcomes of both older adult patients seeking ED care and their treating clinicians as well as the feasibility of incorporating the “What Matters” questions within ED clinical practice.
