Report: Closing the Gaps - Advancing Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery for Older Adults

Red cross report

The American Red Cross and the American Academy of Nursing have released a report, “Closing the Gaps: Advancing Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery for Older Adults.”

Based on a review of the latest evidence on disaster preparedness for older adults, the report was produced by members of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and the American Academy of Nursing Policy Expert Round Table on Emergency/Disaster Preparedness for Older Adults.

In the report, 25 final evidence-informed expert recommendations for interventions, and the rationale behind them, are proposed to reduce adverse outcomes for older adults during and after disasters. In order to achieve a collaborative approach to improving disaster management nation-wide, the recommendations are categorized across six relevant emergency management domains: 1) individuals and unpaid caregivers; 2) community services and programs; 3) healthcare professionals and emergency response personnel; 4) care institutions and organizations; 5) legislation/policy; and 6) research.
