Coalition for Care Partners Peer-Review Papers: Shared Access to Older Adults' Patient Portals and Supporting Age-Friendly Health Care
The Coalition for Care Partners has a JAMA Network Open study and invited commentary published on shared access to older adult's patient portals and shared access to support age-friendly health care.
The paper, "A Multisite Demonstration of Shared Access to Older Adults’ Patient Portals," discusses a study that aimed to increase the use of shared access to patient portals for older adults' care partners. The researchers implemented strategies at three healthcare sites to encourage registration and use of shared portal access. While new shared access registrations didn't increase, the study found modest increases in portal use among registered care partners, such as more frequent logins and viewing of lab results.
The invited commentary, "Facilitating Patient Portal Shared Access to Support Age-Friendly Health Care," explores the challenges and opportunities of shared access patient portals for older adults and their care partners. The author highlights issues like privacy concerns, interoperability problems, and the digital divide affecting older users. While these portals offer potential benefits for managing health needs, the article emphasizes the need for improvements in user-friendly privacy settings, easier registration processes, and better support for patients with varying levels of digital literacy.
