GEDC Toolkit: Addressing Boarding in the Geriatric Emergency Department
The Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) has released a new toolkit, "Addressing Boarding in the Geriatric Emergency Department."
Boarding in the emergency department (ED) is defined by the American College of Emergency Physicians as “a patient who remains in the ED after the patient has been admitted or placed into observation status at the facility but has not been transferred to an inpatient or observation unit.” This toolkit provides tools, recommendations, guidelines and educational resources for EDs to implement processes that address the problem of boarding—and the risks it poses to older adults.
The toolkit contains essential background and real-world examples of successful boarding protocols to help EDs deliver consistent age-friendly care. Importantly, to assist in championing new policies, it also includes a slide deck presenting the financial and patient-centered benefits of boarding reduction practices—all supported by clear evidence.
