Join Us in Lifting up Voices for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: June 15
Join us and our network of grantees and colleagues in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) June 15.
WEAAD was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
Access resources from JAHF partners and grantees to help build strong supports for older adults that prevent elder mistreatment:
- Tips sheets including 12 Things Everyone Can Do to Prevent Elder Abuse and Red Flags of Elder Abuse are available on the WEEAD site from the National Center on Elder Abuse.
- The Elder Mistreatment Emergency Department Toolkit from the National Collaboratory to Address Elder Mistreatment is posted on the Geriatric Emergency Department Collaborative (GEDC) website and contains resources that train ED staff to use simple screens and action steps to address elder mistreatment.
- The National Collaboratory also has a new one-year Mentorship Program to identify and support clinicians, service providers, researchers, policymakers and advocates from multiple disciplines who wish to focus on elder mistreatment and abuse. National Collaboratory staff talk more about the program and WEAAD here.
- The GEDC has additional resources to help emergency department staff detect and address elder mistreatment.
- An Initial Evaluation of the Weinberg Center for Elder Justice’s Shelter Model for Elder Abuse and Mistreatment shows that the innovative shelter model can be a replicable and a cost-efficient solution to meeting the needs of older adults experiencing abuse.
