National Academy of Medicine Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence Program Article: “How Are We Getting Her Off the Ventilator?”

NAM Dx Ex Scholar Story

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has published an article, "How Are We Getting Her Off the Ventilator?" about NAM Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence, Dr. Snigdha Jain.

The NAM Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence program supports clinicians working to improve how diagnoses are made and reassessed in health care, with the goal of reducing diagnostic errors and improving patient outcomes. Dr. Jain, assistant professor and pulmonary and critical care physician at Yale School of Medicine, was the 2025 JAHF-supported Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence.

Dr. Jain’s work focuses on improving care for older adults recovering after critical illness. She emphasizes that diagnostic excellence is an ongoing practice of reassessment, including checking assumptions and asking whether the current diagnosis and treatment plan still fit the patient. In the ICU, she encourages clinicians to pause and reconsider care decisions, noting that “getting your patient off the ventilator is key for their recovery.”

Through the fellowship’s mentorship, peer community and national network, she is developing decision-support approaches, such as tools that help teams identify when patients may be ready to come off ventilators, to support timely reassessment and improve recovery after critical illness.
